David McEwan, M.D. Charitable Fund. Dr. David McEwan began his practice of Family Medicine in Hawaii in 1977. In the spirit of Saint Damien, he has a long standing commitment to “Creating Change” in Hawaii Nei.
He has been a co-founder, advisor and board member of numerous organizations working to improve the health, civil rights and cultural vitality of Hawaii’s LGBTQ people and the larger community, including Life Foundation, Community Consortium of AIDS Physicians of Hawaii, Hawaii LGBT Legacy Foundation, Aikane Investments, Hawaii Public Television, and Equality Hawaii.
David is also the co-founder of the Hawaii LGBT Archives at the University of Hawaii Manoa Hamilton Library: The AIDS & Same- Gender Marriage Papers of David McEwan M.D. & Thomas Ramsey PHd. In 1991 David was awarded the ACLU Allan Saunders Award for Civil Liberties. He has been listed in the Best Doctors of Hawaii in Honolulu Magazine numerous times over the past 38 years.
Dr. McEwan retired in 2015 and continues to inspire and lead in LGBTQ philanthropy with his David McEwan, M.D. Charitable Fund at the Hawaii Community Foundation. He is especially passionate about creating shelter and services for Hawaii’s LGBTQ homeless youth.
