March 31 – April 6: Merrie Monarch Festival
March 31 - April 6
The Merrie Monarch Festival is a week-long cultural event held in each spring, featuring Hawaiian culture and a premier hula competition. Competition performances are held at Hilo’s Edith Kanakaole Stadium on Hawaiʻi Island, including the wahine and kane solos in both the kahiko and ʻauana categories, as well as hula ʻauana and modern hula from some of the best halaus on Hawaiʻi and the mainland. This year, Hoike Night on April 3 will have free admission but, attendees are encouraged to donate at the door to Maui fire relief efforts.
To watch the competition live, local station KFVE will stream the event from its website. If you can’t stream your web browser to your TV for fullscreen, you can get K5 on channel 1006/06 with Spectrum, Hawaiian Tel or DirecTV customer, and on channel 8 with Dish Network.
