The Healer Stones of Kapaemahu Virtual Tour
January 2

Two years ago, the Bishop Museum in Honolulu presented the remarkable Healer Stones of Kapaemahu exhibition in their galleries, and now thereʻs an immersive virtual tour that makes the experience available to all.
The 360 degree tour, available on mobile devices and desktop computers, explores the past and contemporary meanings of four large stones that were long ago placed on Waikīkī Beach to honor four māhū, extraordinary individuals of dual male and female spirit, who brought healing arts from Tahiti to Hawaiʻi. Although the stones have survived for centuries, the story behind them was suppressed and the respected role of māhū nearly erased.
Learn about Hawaiʻi’s long traditions of healing, diversity and inclusion through an extensive collection of objects, archival materials, photos, videos, and animation. There are multiple entry points to the 3D app, allowing you to take either a brief tour or a deep dive into the extensive scholarly resources.
The virtual tour is presented by Bishop Museum in collaboration with Lei Pau Ala Queer Histories of Hawaiʻi, a multidimensional effort to document and memorialize gender and sexual diversity across the uniquely multicultural landscape of Hawaiʻi.
