October 18 + 19: POV’s Pier Kids and Kapaemahu Virtual Screenings + Talk Story

October 18, 2021

In recognition of Honolulu Pride Month, a special two-day event of POV’s Pier Kids virtual screening on Monday, October 18, 6:00pm – 7:00pm and Kapaemahu screening and an LGBTQ+ communities talk story on Tuesday, October 19, 6:00pm – 7:00pm.

Join PBS Hawaii for a special screening of POV’s Pier Kids, a film that shines a light on an underground community in New York City where homeless queer and trans youth of color forge friendships and chosen families.

The following evening, watch a special screening of Kapaemahu, an animated film that reveals the healing power of four mysterious stones on Waikiki Beach – and the legendary dual male and female spirits within them. The stones have become an important focus in recentering Honolulu Pride to indigenous contexts.

Following the screening of Kapaemahu will be an intimate virtual talk story on the challenges and opportunities faced by members of LGBTQ+ communities beyond urban Honolulu.

Panelists include:

  • Joe Wilson, Filmmaker, Kapaemahu
  • Thaddeus Pham, Co-Chair, Hawaiʻi Department of Health Sexual and Gender Minority Workgroup
  • Hao Le, President of Affirmation Hawai’i, Oʻahu
  • Keivalei Cadena, Harm Reduction Programs Manager at Kumukahi Health & Wellness, Hawai’i Island
