Mālama Kawainui Marsh

December 4, 2022 @ 8:00 am - 12:00 pm

Join the Hawai’i Gay Kickball League and the Hawai’i Queer Hiking & Activities Group on Sunday, Dec 4th for a fun, outdoor collaboration to mālama ‘āina and restore the ‘āina at the Kawainui Marsh in Kailua with Hui o Ko’olaupoko (HOK).
Kawainui, Hawai‘i’s largest wetland, is threatened by overgrowth of invasive plants such as bullrush, cattail, water hyacinth, and water lettuce. These plants crowd out areas of open water, reducing habitat for endangered wetland birds such as ‘alae ‘ula (Hawaiian Gallinule), ‘alae ke‘oke‘o (Hawaiian Coot) and ae‘o (Hawaiian Stilt).
Volunteers will assist with hand-pulling of invasive plants, while also replanting areas with native wetland plants.
All friends, family welcome to join! All LGBTQIA+ sports leagues welcome!Interested? Great! Please RSVP here: https://shorturl.at/gLRW9
For any questions, contact HIGKL Community Outreach Director Charlie Mumford or Queer Hiking & Activities Group Organizer Glenn Bunger.
