Sunday, August 11: Aiea Loop Trail Bird and Plant Learning Walk
A walk focused on learning about plants and birds. Limited to 12 people.
This is an educational hike at slower pace with stops and discussion. This trail provides an excellent initial experience of some key trees and plants introduced to Hawaiʻi as well as some key native species. Hike leaders will discuss some of the history of the introduced species, their contributions to Hawaiʻi, and the problems that came with them, including some plants that are destructive or invasive. They’ll also identify and discuss important native species such as ohi’a, koa, and sandalwood, and some of their historical and cultural importance. If lucky, hikers may also see a native bird species or two.
August 17th Saturday Ka’ena Point walk and beach day
5 mile in and out, beautiful coastal views all the way to the bird sanctuary at the westernmost point of the island. Sometimes a dirt trail, sometimes semi-paved, sometimes sand. Optional multiple beaches including Polo/Mokulea (clothing optional) beach afterwards.
August 25th Sunday Foster Botanical Gardens Walkabout and Picnic
A garden in the midst of busy downtown Honolulu? Yes! As the oldest of the Honolulu Botanical Gardens, Foster Garden displays a mature and impressive collection of tropical plants. Some of the magnificent trees in this 14-acre garden were planted in the 1850s by Dr. William Hillebrand. They marked the beginning of a heritage that became The Honolulu Botanical Gardens.
