MVPFAFF/2SLGBTQIA+ is an acronym / initialism that stands for Māhū, Vakasalewa, Palopa, Fa’afafine, Akava’ine, Fakaleitī (Leiti), Fakafifine / 2 Spirit, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer (and/or Questioning) Intersex, Asexual (and/or Allies).

MVPFAFF was developed by Phylesha Brown-Acton in 2010 and refers to those in the Pacific Islander community, who may or may not identify with the LGBT initialism.

2 Spirit is a term within some Indigenous cultures and for some Indigenous people, meaning a person with both a feminine and a masculine spirit.

Other inclusive initialisms and terms used by the community include SGM (sexual and gender minority), pansexual, non-binary, queer, gender-queer and gender-fluid, among others. Many younger people use queer as the preferred umbrella term.

The Hawaiʻi LGBT Legacy Foundation, formed in 2008, retains its original initialism in its name and logo, but embraces the full range of self-identification terms used by our community.
