Kapaemahu: History Restored
February 3, 2024

An important aspect of history buried, then cast aside for more than 80 years, has been restored at the stones of Kapaemahu in Waikīkī. A new plaque, AR app, film, study guide and educational website now highlight the “duality of male and female spirit” of the Tahitianʻs who brought their healing arts to Hawaiʻi. The project includes stories, interpretations, and understandings of these remarkable stones from many schools of thought and individuals including historians, cultural experts, traditional practitioners, and community members who contributed their knowledge. At the unveiling, Mayor Rick Blangiardiʻs noted: “We are proud to celebrate Hawaiʻi’s inclusive history. Our diversity is what makes us strong and brings us together as one community.”
