Black August
August 25, 2022
This month marks the sixth Black August in Honolulu, a month-long observance started by Black activists in the 1970s to commemorate fallen political prisoners, educate the community about conditions in US prisons, and to honor the long traditions of resistance and liberation of Black people around the world. The Popolo Project is taking the month to connect with one other, commit to learning, and strengthening understanding of the places and political moments in which the Black community finds itself.
During Black August 2022 The Popolo Project is investing in relationships with the community, hosting intimate spaces to build and engage with the impact of the military, and organizing the community around pressing issues of water, reproductive health, and the police and prison systems.
Join the public programs and engage with community members who are also hosting spaces committed to the values of Black August.
