SUMMARY:Application deadline: August 31 | Queer to Stay: An LGBTQ+ Business Preservation Initiative
DESCRIPTION:Over the past three years\, the “Queer to Stay” initiative has awarded funds to fifty LGBTQ+ businesses across the country. This year\, the Human Rights Campaign and SHOWTIME® have increased their commitment to this program and will support at least an additional 25 small queer businesses. \nAt a time when LGBTQ+ businesses are working hard to stay open\, they’re also faced with fighting against a wave of hate like we’ve never seen before. Opponents of progress seek to challenge the very existence of LGBTQ+ people and the spaces that they occupy. That is why LGBTQ+-serving businesses are so important; they provide a space for queer folks to be their authentic selves and live their best lives— and they’re not going anywhere. The Queer to Stay program aims to uplift these small businesses and provide them with the resources they need to continue making an impact in their communities— despite the aims of those who seek to silence us\, we’re here to stay. \nFor more information\, click here.

SUMMARY:The Status of LGBTQ+ Rights: An ADA Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Join Americans for Democratic Action and Dr. Brian F. Harrison and ADA’s own Chris Schwartz for a virtual conversation on the status of rights for the LGBTQ+ community. \n“It is no secret that 2023 has been a hard and painful year for the LGBTQ+ community and our allies. After years of progress\, we are now facing a dangerous and deadly backlash from the far-right. In state legislatures across the nation model legislation has been introduced that takes away the rights of LGBTQ+ people and puts their lives in danger. Everything from ʻdon’t say gayʻ legislation\, to bans on drag shows\, to the forced outing of students\, books being pulled from libraries\, and attacks on life saving gender affirming healthcare for trans people has left the LGBTQ+ absolutely under assault.” \nDr. Brian F. Harrison (Ph.D. Northwestern University)\, Founder of the Center for American Political Engagement and Lecturer at the University of Minnesota. Chris Schwartz is the first gay man elected to county wide office in the state of Iowa and is one of only eight out LGBTQ elected officials in the entire state
