Through December 18: AIDS Memorial Quilts
December 6, 2024 - December 18, 2024
Considered the largest community arts project in history, the AIDS Memorial Quilt helps us remember the unique lives of those we’ve lost to HIV/AIDS. Capitol Modern is exhibiting a selection of AIDS Memorial Quilts from Hawaiʻi–on view for the first time in over 20 years– through December 18. Experience stories of resilience and hope through this powerful testament to love, memory, and the activism of those impacted by HIV/AIDS.

The NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt, often abbreviated to AIDS Memorial Quilt or AIDS Quilt, is a memorial to celebrate the lives of people who have died of AIDS-related causes. It is the largest piece of community folk art in the world, and is currently comprised of more than 50,000 panels. It was conceived in 1985, during the early years of the AIDS pandemic, when social stigma prevented many AIDS victims from receiving funerals. It has been displayed on the Mall in Washington, D.C., several times.
