The Elder One (Moothon) at HoMA

January 31 @ 12:30 pm - 2:30 pm

About the Film:

Directed by Geetu Mohandas. 2019. India. 110 min. Malayalam and Hindi with English subtitles.

Part of the Honolulu Bollywood Film Festival + South Asian Cinema 2020

In this ruthless vision of modern Mumbai, writer-director Geetu Mohandas presents a heartbreaking tale of two siblings, looking for each other and themselves while trying not to fall victim to the cycles of violence that surround them. Facing prejudice and an encroaching sense of oppression, young Mulla escapes to the big city, where older brother Akbar had disappeared to years before. Upon reaching the city, the child is drawn into the underworld of the mysterious gang leader Bhai (Nivin Pauly in a masterful performance). Through the deft hands of Mohandas, The Elder One is a powerful drama contemplating gender, sexuality, and tolerance in the face of brutal reality.
