Ka Pō Leʻa o Halāliʻi

April 30, 2021 @ 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm

Ka Pō Leʻa o Halāliʻi is a new series from the Hawaiian Theatre Program debuting this semester showcasing new works by Kānaka Maoli Theatre artists in honor of Halāliʻi, an aliʻi of Niʻihau and Kauaʻi who was a celebrated patron of the arts.

Ka Pō Leʻa o Halāliʻi is an extension of their previous guest lecture series, Ka Unulau o Halāliʻi, which featured esteemed Kumu Hula Kealiʻi Reichel, Keawe Lopes, Kekuhi Kanakaʻole, Kaumakaiwa Kanakaʻole, Kalani Akana, Kaponoʻai Molitau and ʻAuliʻi Mitchell as well as local Kanaka Maoli artist Meleana Meyer and the world-renowned father of Māori language revitalization, Sir Tīmoti Karetu.

This second installment of Ka Pō Leʻa o Halāliʻi will feature their papa Hula Kiʻi, THEA 478. These hula were developed as mid-term projects focused on retelling moʻolelo and incorporating a variety of hula kiʻi practices and conventions. They will present a great variety of hula kiʻi, from more modern hula with hand held kiʻi in the Nona Beamer fashion, to decorated shells and gourds playing puppets and of course the more traditional hand held and wood carved kiʻi. Join them for another night celebrating new works!
