Exhibition: Toward Queer Justice in Hawai’i

November 24, 2024

Lei Pua ʻAla Queer Histories of Hawaiʻi and King Kamehameha V Judiciary History Center announce a new traveling exhibition that explores the intersections of law, gender, and sexuality in Hawaiʻi. It is on display now, Monday-Friday through November 29, in the rotunda of Aliʻiolani Hale, home of the Hawaiʻi Supreme Court. You can see a digital version of the exhibition here.

This first-of-its-kind exhibition highlights the complex ways in which gender and sexual diversity has been treated in the evolving social, political, and legal landscape of the islands, from early times to the present day.  It features little-known stories and pivotal moments that reveal highs and lows across the centuries, from Hawaiian cultural embrace of māhū (individuals of dual male and female spirit) and aikāne (intimate friends of the same-sex) to missionary condemnation and colonial erasure, from plantation- and military-era persecution and criminalization to the emergence of gay liberation and the modern movement for dignity, respect, and civil rights for all.

Following its display at Aliʻiolani Hale, the exhibition will be available on loan to libraries, schools, courts, and other civic and educational sites across Hawaiʻi.

For information about hosting the traveling exhibition in your community, please contact Lei Pua ʻAla Director Joe Wilson at QwavesJoe@yahoo.com.
