SUMMARY:August 19\, 24 & 26: Joyland (جوائے لینڈ)
DESCRIPTION:The debut feature from writer-director Saim Sadiq\, Joyland explores the many sides of love and desire in a patriarchal society. Gentle and timid\, Haider (Ali Junejo) lives with his wife Mumtaz (Rasti Farooq)\, his father\, and his elder brother’s family in Lahore\, Pakistan. Following a long spell of unemployment\, Haider finally lands a job at a Bollywood-style burlesque\, telling his family he is a theater manager\, when in actuality\, he is a backup dancer. \nThe unusual position shakes up the steadfast traditional dynamics of his household and enables Haider to break out of his shell. As he acclimates to the new job\, Haider becomes infatuated with the strong-willed trans woman Biba (Alina Khan) who runs the show—an unforeseen partnership that opens his eyes and ultimately his worldview\, in ways both unexpected and intimate. \nJoyland is being screened in conjunction with Salman Toor: No Ordinary Love. \n

SUMMARY:Application deadline: August 31 | Queer to Stay: An LGBTQ+ Business Preservation Initiative
DESCRIPTION:Over the past three years\, the “Queer to Stay” initiative has awarded funds to fifty LGBTQ+ businesses across the country. This year\, the Human Rights Campaign and SHOWTIME® have increased their commitment to this program and will support at least an additional 25 small queer businesses. \nAt a time when LGBTQ+ businesses are working hard to stay open\, they’re also faced with fighting against a wave of hate like we’ve never seen before. Opponents of progress seek to challenge the very existence of LGBTQ+ people and the spaces that they occupy. That is why LGBTQ+-serving businesses are so important; they provide a space for queer folks to be their authentic selves and live their best lives— and they’re not going anywhere. The Queer to Stay program aims to uplift these small businesses and provide them with the resources they need to continue making an impact in their communities— despite the aims of those who seek to silence us\, we’re here to stay. \nFor more information\, click here.
