SUMMARY:Caring for and Supporting LGBTQ Seniors
DESCRIPTION:Research shows that members of the LGBTQ community have distinct health care needs and experience disparities in care and health outcomes related to aging. According to a study explored in Medical School Curricula\, older LGBT adults were found to have a higher risk of disability\, poor mental health\, smoking and increased alcohol consumption than heterosexuals. \nAARP North Carolina has partnered with Shevel Mavins and Kaii Marie Robertson\, co-founders of the Behavioral Health Mind Body Academy\, to educate family caregivers on their LGBTQ loved ones’ unique needs and share tips on creating a supportive network that can help reduce some of the health challenges. \nLearn how to identify culturally competent providers and how to find LGBTQ-friendly attorneys to assist with advance directives and other legal documents\, for example. Shevel and Kaii will also share resources you can tap in the event of discrimination by a nursing home\, assisted living facility or a senior living community because of your loved one’s sexual orientation. \nLearn more and register here.

SUMMARY:The Status of LGBTQ+ Rights: An ADA Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Join Americans for Democratic Action and Dr. Brian F. Harrison and ADA’s own Chris Schwartz for a virtual conversation on the status of rights for the LGBTQ+ community. \n“It is no secret that 2023 has been a hard and painful year for the LGBTQ+ community and our allies. After years of progress\, we are now facing a dangerous and deadly backlash from the far-right. In state legislatures across the nation model legislation has been introduced that takes away the rights of LGBTQ+ people and puts their lives in danger. Everything from ʻdon’t say gayʻ legislation\, to bans on drag shows\, to the forced outing of students\, books being pulled from libraries\, and attacks on life saving gender affirming healthcare for trans people has left the LGBTQ+ absolutely under assault.” \nDr. Brian F. Harrison (Ph.D. Northwestern University)\, Founder of the Center for American Political Engagement and Lecturer at the University of Minnesota. Chris Schwartz is the first gay man elected to county wide office in the state of Iowa and is one of only eight out LGBTQ elected officials in the entire state
