SUMMARY:Gubernatorial Candidate Forum
DESCRIPTION:Studies have shown that LGBTQ people\, especially LGBTQ people of color\, are overrepresented in the criminal and juvenile justice systems. According to the Movement Advancement Project\, “LGBTQ people are frequently targeted by and vulnerable to increased criminalization and abuse by law enforcement. They regularly experience assault and violence in correctional settings. And they face extraordinary challenges to rebuilding their lives upon release from the system\, both because of their criminal record and because they are LGBTQ.” \nWatch this Hawaiʻi Gubernatorial Candidate Forum to learn more about where candidates for our next governor stand on criminal legal reform issues before the August 13th Primary Election. \nThe event will be live-streamed online on Facebook (ACLU of Hawaiʻi\, ‘Ōlelo Community Media\, ʻEkolu Mea Nui and Matsunaga Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution) and YouTube (ACLU of Hawaiʻi and ʻŌlelo Community Media). The LIVE broadcast will also air on 7/17 at 3:00 PM on OLELO49. Rebroadcast is scheduled for 7/29 at 8:30 PM\, 7/30 at 8:30 AM\, 7/31 at 10 PM\, and 8/1 at 12 PM on OLELO49. \nThis forum is hosted by ʻEkolu Mea Nui and ACLU Hawaiʻi. SUMMARY:Even Queerer Night- BYOPicnic and Taming of the Shrew
DESCRIPTION:A picnic\, then a gender-swapped Shakespeare play at a historic site? Sign us up! $25 per ticket\, and picnic time beforehand for socializing! Time to see a gender-bent modernization of Taming of the Shrew. Performances will be live\, in-person at Hawaiian Mission Houses (following CDC guidelines). \nIn recent years\, public sentiment has transformed Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew from one of his most-loved plays (for its physical comedy and sexual banter) to one of his most loathed (for its abusive primary relationship). Cruel Theatre founder Taurie Kinoshita tackles this problematic play with a materialist feminist deconstruction that takes place in 1950s America straightjacketed by traditional sexual mores and gender roles\, then gender swaps several characters. \nKate is the man. Petruchio is the woman. Some male characters are played by men\, some by women; some female characters are played by women\, some by men. What follows remains one of Shakespeare’s great\, comic romances\, viewed through a subversive lens. Kate learns to love Petruchio\, and Petruchio falls in love with Kate—and characters are who they know and believe themselves to be. \nFor more information and to purchase tickets\, click here.

SUMMARY:Through October 16: The Healer Stones of Kapaemahu
DESCRIPTION:The Healer Stones of Kapaemahu exhibition explores the past and contemporary meanings of four large stones that were long ago placed on Waikīkī Beach to honor four māhū\, extraordinary individuals of dual male and female spirit\, who brought healing arts from Tahiti to Hawaiʻi. Although the stones have survived for centuries\, the story behind them has been suppressed and the respected role of māhū erased. \nWithin the Castle Memorial Building\, visitors encounter a life-size rendering of the stones and spirits\, watch their story unfold in a captivating\, animated film\, and then continue from the theater to an enormous room lined with projection screens that immerse the viewer in the long history of the site and its story. The exhibition also explores contemporary māhū culture in Hawaiʻi and the Pacific\, through compelling portraits\, video interviews and a section devoted to the Glades Show Lounge and Hawaiʻiʻs infamous “intent to deceive” laws. \nThe exhibition continues through October 16\, 2022. \nLearn more and get your tickets here.  \nLearn more about the Kapaemanu project here.
