SUMMARY:Through October 8: Salman Toor | No Ordinary Love
DESCRIPTION:No Ordinary Love is Salman Toor’s (b. 1983\, Pakistan) first museum exhibition in the Pacific region. The show features approximately 40 recent paintings and works on paper in the artist’s unique style of contemporary genre painting. \nWeaving together contemporary scenes with historical motifs drawn from European\, American\, and South Asian artistic traditions\, Toor’s work tells stories of family life\, queer desire\, and immigrant experience. Toor lives and works in New York City but grew up in Lahore\, Pakistan\, where he was born. Working from this perspective\, his paintings center Brown\, queer figures\, and reflect on power and sexuality in shifting cultural environments. \nUsing a signature palette of rich emerald greens\, Toor’s paintings are infused with melancholy and glamour. These moody depictions amplify small moments of existence\, blending vulnerability\, desire\, violence and celebration in compositions based on Toor’s imagination. Vivid brushstrokes radiate throughout the canvas\, creating an atmospheric distance that suggests both intimacy and isolation. \nThe exhibition is organized by the Baltimore Museum of Art\, and curated by Asma Naeem\, the Baltimore Museum of Art’s Dorothy Wagner Wallis Director. It is accompanied by a fully illustrated catalog\, that includes essays by Naeem\, writer Evan Moffitt\, as well as a short story by acclaimed author Hanya Yanagihara\, who grew up in Honolulu.

This year\, the Human Rights Campaign and SHOWTIME® have increased their commitment to this program and will support at least an additional 25 small queer businesses. \nAt a time when LGBTQ+ businesses are working hard to stay open\, they’re also faced with fighting against a wave of hate like we’ve never seen before. Opponents of progress seek to challenge the very existence of LGBTQ+ people and the spaces that they occupy. That is why LGBTQ+-serving businesses are so important; they provide a space for queer folks to be their authentic selves and live their best lives— and they’re not going anywhere. Gentle and timid\, Haider (Ali Junejo) lives with his wife Mumtaz (Rasti Farooq)\, his father\, and his elder brother’s family in Lahore\, Pakistan. Following a long spell of unemployment\, Haider finally lands a job at a Bollywood-style burlesque\, telling his family he is a theater manager\, when in actuality\, he is a backup dancer. \nThe unusual position shakes up the steadfast traditional dynamics of his household and enables Haider to break out of his shell. As he acclimates to the new job\, Haider becomes infatuated with the strong-willed trans woman Biba (Alina Khan) who runs the show—an unforeseen partnership that opens his eyes and ultimately his worldview\, in ways both unexpected and intimate. \nJoyland is being screened in conjunction with Salman Toor: No Ordinary Love. \n
