SUMMARY:The Infinite Garden
DESCRIPTION:Inspired by Persian mythology and embracing digital art forms\, Shangri La’s Artist-in-Residence Navid Sinaki  has created The Infinite Garden\, a queer epic about a king who builds a garden for each of his three lovers; one of flowers\, one of fruit\, and another of glass. Each lover regales the king with tales of shrinking princes\, supernatural trickery\, and paramours who never quite meet until death. \nThe Infinite Garden reimagines ancient tales through films and visuals drawn from historical artifacts. The installation\, on view at HoMA through March 3\, 2024\, also features four rarely seen Zand and Qajar period paintings. \nNavid Sinaki is an artist and writer from Tehran who currently lives in Los Angeles\, California. His work entwines mythology with outdated digital media\, including early aughts-style web pages\, DVD menus\, and diaristic text that falls somewhere between fiction and nonfiction. Sinaki’s work has screened at museums and art houses around the world\, including the Modern Museum in Stockholm\, Lincoln Center\, British Film Institute\, REDCAT\, and Cineteca Nacional in Mexico. His debut novel Medusa of the Roses will be released by Grove Atlantic in 2024.

SUMMARY:HIFF Selects: FRIDA
DESCRIPTION:An intimately raw and magical journey through the life\, mind\, and heart of iconic artist Frida Kahlo. Told through her own words for the very first time — drawn from her diary\, revealing letters\, essays\, and print interviews — and brought vividly to life by lyrical animation inspired by her unforgettable artwork. \nThe life of Frida Kahlo has become stuff of legend. Born in 1907\, the inspiring painter is often described as a surrealist or magical realist\, a force of nature who used her art and style to pursue questions of identity\, post-colonialism\, gender\, race and class well ahead of her time. \nHer legacy is long and complex\, but in today’s popular culture she’s best known for her fierce pride in her Mexican heritage\, her distinctive self-portraits\, her trailblazing gender non-conformity and her passionate love affairs. — Pink News \nFor more information\, click here.

SUMMARY:Kaʻiwa Ridge (Lanikai Pillbox) Sunset Hike
DESCRIPTION:Join the Oʻahu Queer Hiking group on one of their favorite evening hikes to end your weekend on a beautiful note. This is considered a challenging route because of the steep initial climb (and the parking). Due to the drier topography\, this hike can get quite sunny and warm during the late afternoon. \nPlease bring hiking/comfortable shoes\, at least 2 liters of water\, optional flashlight\, sun protection/hat\, a towel and snacks. Remember that you want to be present\, enjoy the hikes and meet other people\, so ideally be sober and no recreational drugs in your system. \nDogs are welcome\, but must be on a leash. \nOʻahu Queer Hiking advises that “parking is hilariously terrible” and encourages hikers to join a carpool. Click here. \nFor more details\, click here or here. \nAny questions\, please contact Glenn at 808-221-7261 or email at oahuqueerhiking@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:HIFF: Green Night
DESCRIPTION:The Hawaiʻi International Film Festivalʻs 2024 Spring Showcase is featuring GREEN NIGHT on March 24-25.  This thrilling feminist noir\, shot in both Korean and Mandarin\, premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival\, and stars Fan Bingbing and Lee Joo-Young (BROKER\, ITAEWON CLASS). \nAfter a chance encounter\, two women find themselves in the underbelly of Seoul in this tale of survival. Chinese immigrant Xia (Chinese superstar Fan Bingbing) works as airport security staff in South Korea. When she catches a spunky\, green-haired drug smuggler on the job\, Xia is unexpectedly beguiled by the wayward girl. \nSeeking freedom from the abusive men in their lives\, the duo embark on an arduous night in Seoul’s drug underworld. But when blood spills\, the women go on the run\, with only each other to rely on. From their shared predicament blooms a deep tenderness and solidarity\, bound by the desire to escape oppression. GREEN NIGHT adapts film noir’s gritty masculinity to portray a female bond that is gentle yet unflinching in the will to survive. \nLearn more and purchase tickets here.

SUMMARY:Transgender Day of Visibility
DESCRIPTION:Join Hawaiʻi Health & Harm Reduction (HHHRC) at the State Capitol for Transgender Day of Visibility (TDOV) sign-waving and rally. This day is not just about being seen; it is about celebrating the diverse experiences and contributions of transgender individuals in our society. \nCome together and raise awareness as we proudly display messages of support and acceptance. Whether you are a seasoned advocate or new to activism\, your presence makes a difference. Let us show the world that we stand in solidarity with the transgender community. \n— \nTDOV is an international day dedicated to celebrating transgender individuals and raising awareness about the challenges they face. It is a day to honor their resilience\, strength\, and courage in living authentically. By coming together\, we can amplify their voices and advocate for a more inclusive and equitable society. \nInternational TDOV was created in 2010 by trans advocate Rachel Crandall. Crandall\, the head of Transgender Michigan\, created TDOV in response to the overwhelming majority of media stories about transgender people being focused on violence. She hoped to create a day where people could re-focus on celebrating the lives of transgender people\, empowering them to live authentically\, while still acknowledging that due to discrimination\, not every trans person can or wants to be visible. \nResources: \nHawaii Sexual and Gender Minorities Resource Hub \nHHHRC Kua’ana Project \nMalama I Ke Ola Health Center \nTrans Student Educational Resources \nGLSEN Transgender Day of Visibility \nNational Center for Transgender Equality \nTransgender Law Center \nTrans Lifeline
