SUMMARY:The Status of LGBTQ+ Rights: An ADA Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Join Americans for Democratic Action and Dr. Brian F. Harrison and ADA’s own Chris Schwartz for a virtual conversation on the status of rights for the LGBTQ+ community. \n“It is no secret that 2023 has been a hard and painful year for the LGBTQ+ community and our allies. After years of progress\, we are now facing a dangerous and deadly backlash from the far-right. In state legislatures across the nation model legislation has been introduced that takes away the rights of LGBTQ+ people and puts their lives in danger. Everything from ʻdon’t say gayʻ legislation\, to bans on drag shows\, to the forced outing of students\, books being pulled from libraries\, and attacks on life saving gender affirming healthcare for trans people has left the LGBTQ+ absolutely under assault.” \nDr. Brian F. Harrison (Ph.D. Northwestern University)\, Founder of the Center for American Political Engagement and Lecturer at the University of Minnesota. Chris Schwartz is the first gay man elected to county wide office in the state of Iowa and is one of only eight out LGBTQ elected officials in the entire state

SUMMARY:Nominations deadline: The Business of Pride 2023
DESCRIPTION:The nomination deadline for the 2023 Business of Pride Awards is July 23\, 2023. Click here to make your nominations. Pacific Business News is looking for LGBTQ leaders\, companies\, and allies in Hawaii who are successful in their careers\, active in their communities\, and advocates for inclusion and equality. \nTo ensure your nomination is as competitive as possible\, please review the following tips: \n1. Ensure that all areas of the nomination are filled out\, and each question is answered.  The judges can only work off of information provided in the nomination packet and/or letters of support- so if something isn’t listed\, it can’t be considered. \n2. For ease\, feel free to use bullet points\, numbers\, etc. instead of full paragraphs. \n3. The best and most successful nominations include facts and figures\, not opinions.  For example\, let us know how a person or company increased revenue that year and provide numbers\, vs. letting us know that they are “great to work with”. \n4. Letters of support are certainly not required\, but can be very helpful to our panel of judges. \n5. Make sure the nomination is submitted on time. \nPlease contact Rose Balagtas at rbalagtas@bizjournals.com or (808)955-8072 with any questions.

SUMMARY:Lā Hoʻihoʻi Ea
DESCRIPTION:King Kamehameha III established Lā Hoʻihoʻi Ea (Sovereignty Restoration Day) in 1843 as a days-long celebration following the rightful return of sovereign government to Hawaiʻi by the United Kingdom\, after an illegal seizure by one of their representatives. He proclaimed\, “Ua mau ke ea o ka ʻāina i ka pono”–the ea (sovereignty\, life\, breath) of our land is perpetuated through justice. \nHawaiians continue to breathe life into sovereignty\, and one way to do this is to celebrate ka Lā Hoʻihoʻi Ea. After decades of suppression\, the celebrations were revived in 1985 by Uncle Kekuni Blaisdell and other kānaka aloha ʻāina as a way to give voice to Hawaiian independence and to issues surrounding the return and demilitarization of Hawaiian lands. \nLā Hoʻihoʻi Ea invite you to celebrate in your community\, or to join the LHE Honolulu ʻohana at Thomas Square on July 30 from 10am – 6pm.
