Judge Foley’s authored a recent column in Honolulu Civil Beat\, “Reflections on the Respect for Marriage Act.” \nPlease join us to hear from our distinguished guests and celebrate Hawaii’s historic role in the pursuit of marriage equality. SUMMARY:Keala Kennelly | PBS Hawaiʻi | What School You Went?
DESCRIPTION:Professional surfer Keala Kennelly wears many hats these days\, including actor\, professional DJ and Big Wave World Champion. But\, there’s one hat that she secretly wore for years while surfing on the world tour\, an identity that she hid from her peers and sponsors. In 2005\, just two years after finishing runner-up in the World Title chase\, the Kaua’i native made the most important decision of her life when she told the world she was gay. On the next “What School You Went?”\, Kennelly shares why she was terrified about coming out\, knowing it would be “career suicide.” She shares how the decision to stop living a double life gave her back her life\, and how she is now a crusader for LGBTQ rights and equality in women’s sports.

SUMMARY:March 20 - 24: National LGBT Health Awareness Week
DESCRIPTION:The National Coalition for LGBTQ Health invites you to join them for the 21st National LGBTQ Health Awareness Week\, taking place March 20 to March 24\, 2023. This year’s theme is AWAKE AND AWARE. \nThis theme was chosen because despite a number of positive steps forward\, LGBTQ people continue to face significant barriers to accessing healthcare services. This includes the discrimination they encounter from insurers and medical providers\, as well as the delays or denials of care they face. In addition\, in many cases\, a lack of federal legislation prohibiting discrimination on the basis of Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity is the primary source of these barriers. \nAs healthcare providers and advocates for the LGBTQ community and other underserved populations who experience health disparities\, we are AWAKE to What’s Happening and AWARE of What’s Right. This Week is intended to help the healthcare community advocate for reducing barriers to LGBTQ persons by creating and maintaining safe\, inclusive and welcoming environments—and ensuring quality\, accessible and non-discriminatory health care. \nIf your organization has a program or event planned for National GLBT Health Awareness Week\, and youʻd like us to promote it or partner with you\, please contact us here at the Hawai’i LGBT Legacy Foundation at info@hawaiilgbtlegacy.com \nClick here to view a complete list of LGBTQ Awareness Days from LGBTQnation.com

SUMMARY:Anticipatory Grief Workshop for LGBTQ+ Caregivers
DESCRIPTION:Join FCA for a 90-minute virtual workshop to better understand how anticipatory grief might be affecting you as a LGBTQ+ caregiver. Subjects Covered During the Workshop: defining anticipatory grief\, identifying ways in which anticipatory grief may be affecting you\, discuss strategies to help process anticipatory grief. \nThe feelings of grief tied to loss are an ongoing part of our role as caregivers when looking after family or friends suffering from chronic or terminal illnesses. We grieve the gradual loss of those we care for due to their loss of cognition\, mobility\, or other aspects that defined them. We grieve the loss of parts of who we are as we prioritize caregiving over personal activities that might have recharged us\, brought us joy\, or even offered us an escape from our day-to-day. \nMany of us also experience the weight and pain of the loss of the person we are caring for before their death\, yet never identify these feelings as anticipatory grief\, or understand the impact this grief has on our well-being. \nLearn more and register here.
